Tore Rem

It is a great honor to be asked to contribute to the deeply meaningful work of the Danish National Research Foundation. It is with humility that I take on the task of serving on the board, and I’m confident that it will be a learning experience. I very much look forward to working with my fellow board members and to get to know better the Danish research landscape, where so much excellent work is being done. I very much admire and support the Danish National Research Foundation’s commitment to supporting its grantees through freedom, trust, and involvement.

Although I take on the task with a hint of fear and trembling, I’m very much looking forward to the demanding job of selecting the next generation of Centers of Excellence.

I am director of UiO:Democracy, an interdisciplinary research initiative on democracy at the University of Oslo. Before that, from 2019 to 2023, I led another large research initiative, UiO:Nordic. My academic background is in English literature, and I have held posts in Oslo and Oxford. I have served on many boards, within and outside of the academy, and have participated extensively in the evaluation of research. I have also been engaged in public debates about the role of the university and the humanities.
