The collaborative relationship between the DNRF and the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) was established in 2005. The objective was to promote collaboration between Chinese and Danish research groups within the life sciences, natural sciences, and technical sciences.

The DNRF and the NSFC identified a range of common interests for joint calls. The NSFC considered it crucial that cooperation be established within research areas in which Denmark was particularly strong. The DNRF considered it crucial that the proposed projects and the researchers involved in them meet high international standards and that the proposed projects lead to significant synergies and add value to the collaboration.

The foundations have conducted four symposia based on four themes. The first two symposia were held in Beijing and the final two in Copenhagen.

The four themes were:

  • Cancer research
  • Nanotechnology
  • Renewable energy
  • Information and communication technology (ICT)

The symposia were aimed at investigating the potential for increased and stronger cooperation between Denmark and China and, at the same time, contributing to the government’s aim of establishing stronger ties with China.

All four symposia have resulted in joint proposals for establishing Danish-Chinese research centers and have given rise to 10 Danish-Chinese research centers.

See the list of the 10 Danish-Chinese research centers here

Currently, there are no plans for holding further symposia.
