New report

Investment in basic science must pave the way for future critical technologies.

The development of critical technologies requires strong basic science. This is documented in a new report, “The Role of Basic Science in Deep Tech”, prepared by DTU Entrepreneurship for the DNRF, Independent Research Fund Denmark, The Royal Danish Academy of Sciences and Letters, and the Carlsberg Foundation.

The report’s key conclusions are that basic science requires stable, long-term funding and intellectual freedom, diversity in research and financing, as well as effective translation of research into innovation.

The theme of the report was addressed at the ASCEND Innovation Conference during the session Paving the way: The role of basic research in building scalable deep tech innovation”.

The ASCEND conference brought together EU policymakers, investors, researchers, and startups to formulate concrete recommendations on how Europe can better translate deep-tech solutions into viable startups and successful companies—thereby strengthening its global position as a technological frontrunner. The conference was  held on 25 and 26 November 2025.
