Opening of Center for Silicon Photonics for Optical Communications (SPOC) April 16, 2015

Many colleagues and friends celebrated the opening of the new DNRF Center of Excellence, the Center for Silicon Photonics for Optical Communications (SPOC), on Thursday, April 16.  The center is located at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) with Leif Oxenløwe as the center leader. The center’s research will focus on improving Internet speed.

The center will explore optical signal processing in photonic wires to greatly improve bandwidth and energy efficiency and will also explore new spatially distributed data transmission with data densities much higher than those available today.

Speakers at the opening

The day included speeches by the DNRF’s chair, Liselotte Højgaard, and DTU rector Anders Overgaard Bjarklev, who congratulated “the fastest team in the world.” Leif Oxenløwe presented his center’s team and highlighted some elements of the SPOC’s planned research over the next six years.

Posters at the reception allowed attendees to read more about the center’s research.
