The NSF Nordic Research Opportunity 2011 – information for applicants

The Danish National Research Foundation (DNRF) announces the Nordic Research Opportunity in collaboration with the National Science Foundation (NSF) enabling Graduate Research Fellows to carry out research visits for periods of 2 through 12 months at the DNRF Centers of Excellence.

The main strategy of the Danish National Research Foundation is to establish and fund Centers of Excellence and since 1991, the DNRF has supported Danish research environments with a total of 5 billion DKK. This makes the DNRF Canters of Excellence great sites for obtaining international experiences in a recognized research environment at the highest level and for establishing collaborations with relevant counterparts in Denmark, adding a valuable international dimension to the Graduate Research Fellowship experience.

The research visits will be offered on a competitive basis as a supplemental award and active Graduate Research Fellows on tenure or reserve and at least one completed year of graduate school are eligible for applying. Please read more on the application process in the NSF Dear Colleague Letter for the NRO in 2011-2012.

Through this pilot collaboration, the Graduate Research Fellows will be exposed to Danish researchers in internationally recognized research environments within all research fields. The DNRF strongly encourages interested Graduate Research Fellows in contacting relevant faculty members at the DNRF Centers of Excellence to discuss possible NRO research visits in detail.

Letters of endorsement and collaboration

Fellows who wish to pursue a Nordic Research Opportunity must obtain a letter of endorsement from his/her faculty advisor as well as a letter of collaboration from the Danish host.

Evaluation and selection of participants

The proposal deadline is January 14 2011 through NSF FastLane. Supplemental funding requests for the Nordic Research Opportunity will be subject to merit review by the NSF. The final selection of fellows will depend on agreement by the NSF and the DNRF.

Award information

Support for the visiting Fellow’s research, education and additional living expenses will be provided by the DNRF through the Danish host institution as a supplemental grant to the hosting Center of Excellence.

The support for added living expenses will be approximately 9000 DKK per month and the Danish host institution will be able to receive up to 21.600 DKK per month (including overhead) to cover expenses for the fellow’s research and education activities while in Denmark. The DNRF will contact the centers in question after the NSF merit review.
