Birth weight affects risk of mental illness

A cooperation between scientists from Center for Social Evolution and Yale University supports the theory that there is an overall connection between infant’s birth weight and the risk of developing mental illness like schizophrenia or different kinds of autism later in life. The research result has now been published in Proceedings of the Royal Society.

”The purpose of our center is to develop and test evolutionary theories about how conflicts at gene level might threaten nature’s most beautyful forms of cooperation. Not surprisingly humans are part of this reality too and insight into our biological evolution can help us understand our vulnerability to certain illnesses”, says Jacobus Boomsma from the DNRF center.
