Life started 700 million years earlier than previously assumed

Scientists at the Danish National Research Foundation’s Nordic Centre for Earth Evolution (NordCEE) at the University of Southern Denmark and the University of Copenhagen have done a remarkable discovery, which rewrites the history of life.

Analysis of ancient soil shows that oxygen and thereby life on Earth was already thriving when the soil was formed 3 billion years ago. That is 700 million years earlier than previously expected. The discovery shows that life has developed much faster than we have believed.
